B-12 In the Spotlight!
Vitamin B-12 levels in the brain are much lower in:
- The Elderly population
- Autism
- Schizophrenia
A study in PLOS One found that vitamin B12 levels in the brain are much lower in the elderly population as well as in individuals with autism or schizophrenia. Autistic children were found to have brain vitamin B12 levels three times lower than controls. These differences were not seen in serum B12 levels. This lower B-12 level is thought to correlate with the inability of the aging brain to maintain memory. The best forms of B-12 supplements are hydroxo-b12 and methyl-B12.
